How does bike suspension react to freezing temperatures?

Air‑spring suspension components can be strongly affected by cold weather. The following points are good to keep in mind.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store your bike indoors, but allow it time to acclimate to outdoor temperatures before riding. Avoid taking it directly from warm conditions into sub‑zero temperatures — thermal shock stresses the seals. Ideally, the bike should be allowed to cool down outdoors for about an hour before use.

  • If the bike is stored in cold environments, maintain slightly higher fork pressure than usual.

Air Pressure Management

  • In extreme cold, air pressure drops significantly — check and increase pressure after the fork has acclimated to the cold environment.

  • Never set the pressure indoors and then immediately ride in deep cold. The suspension will be too soft and more susceptible to suckdown, a phenomenon where negative pressure prevents the fork or shock from returning to full extension.

Pre‑Ride Warm‑Up

  • Before riding in cold conditions, cycle the suspension through its full travel 10–20 times by pushing down on the handlebar or bike. This helps distribute lubricants around the seals and ensures smooth movement and proper seal seating.

Inflation

  • The air‑spring suspension components on Helkama bikes are equipped with a Schrader‑type valve, which is opened using a shock pump. Always use a high‑quality pump and ensure the pump head is securely attached before inflating.
